Among other events we held a film screening and a discussion about women and girls in prison, hosted by Life After Life; a commemoration of the life and work of Marilyn Buck, who spent half her life behind bars as a political prisoner; a vigil in front of the coroner's office with audio recordings and readings from the inside; a conference by Kim Pate on the challenges we face opposing the prison industrial complex (listen ); a workshop on trans formative justice; and a street festival for
political prisoners.
On the 10th, for Prisoner Justice Day, Alex Hundert and Mandy Hiscocks, political prisoners held in Ontario as a result of their role in the resistance to the G20 in 2010, sent us a statement denouncing (amongst other things) the coming into effect of law C-10 on the eve of Prisoners' Justice Day. The statement was written with input from more than a dozen prisoners inside the Central North Correctional Complex, and has been signed so far by 56 prisoners in Penetang and Vanier prisons, which is 100% of all of those who had the opportunity to read it. This statement was disseminated and read out loud during our activities that week.
The day of August 10th is an occasion to express our solidarity with struggles inside. We hope to see other groups joining us in 2013 for a second week against prisons.
